Another method to dissolve common biases in the hiring process is to be clear and consistent in how you assess people. Figure out what knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAO’s), such as cultural fit, are actually needed for a person to successfully fill this position in the company. Without a clear, accurate, and written description of what is expected of the new hire to fill the position, it is easier for the hiring process to be based on purely subjective biases and “gut feelings''. This also creates a breeding ground for rejected applicants to develop perceived injustice if the company cannot offer enough objective reasons for why they decided on another applicant. Developing and clearly stating the position’s KSAOs before the hiring process even begins is for the peace of mind of the company and future applicants. If your company needs assistance in discovering the KSAO’s of the open position or in aiding the hiring managers in scoring applicants through only those competencies for a more objective process, consider hiring Catching Leadership!
